Understanding Yamaoka’s Haunting
The Spirit’s power, Yamaoka’s Haunting, allows her to become invisible and move at high speed through the Ethereal Plane, primarily tracking survivors by audio cues. This power is central to her oppressive chase potential and mind game capabilities. Activating Yamaoka’s Haunting causes the Spirit to leave behind a stationary “husk” at her starting location, which emits a terror radius and appears to survivors using aura-reading abilities.
Yamaoka’s Haunting consists of two main components: phasewalk and passive phasing. While phasewalking, the Spirit is completely invisible to survivors and moves at over 7 meters per second for up to 5 seconds. This speed allows her to quickly traverse distances and catch survivors off guard. Unlike the Wraith, the Spirit’s phasewalk is temporary, and she can become visible again without a movement penalty. Her base movement speed outside of phasewalk is 4.4 m/s (110%), which is slower than most other killers, balancing her powerful phasewalk ability.
Phasewalk Mechanics and Strategies
During a phasewalk, survivors are invisible to the Spirit. Therefore, tracking relies heavily on environmental and audio cues. Key indicators include scratch marks (unless using the Mother/Daughter Ring add-on), moving grass, moving generator mechanics, and survivor sounds like footsteps, pained breathing, and moans from injured survivors. Injured survivors are particularly valuable targets due to their consistent audio cues, making them easier to track during a phasewalk.
Upon exiting a phasewalk, the Spirit briefly maintains her phasewalk momentum and gains an extended lunge range. This momentum and lunge duration can be increased by using the Tsuba and Wakizashi katana add-ons. Survivors outside the Spirit’s terror radius hear a global sound effect when she activates phasewalk. Additionally, unless the Prayer Beads add-on is equipped, a “whooshing” sound is emitted when phasewalking near a survivor, providing them with an early warning. Experienced players can use directional audio cues to fake a phasewalk in one direction around a loop, then quickly change direction before the survivor can react, punishing predictable movements.
Passive Phasing and Mind Games
Beyond active phasewalking, Yamaoka’s Haunting includes a “passive phasing” aspect. The Spirit constantly changes expressions and positions, even when not phasewalking. Occasionally, her position will briefly shift, leaving mirror images behind. This makes her movement difficult for survivors to predict and can trick them into misjudging her direction, especially in areas like jungle gyms.
Passive phasing can also be used to create effective mind games. By standing completely still, the Spirit can appear to be her husk. Survivors within her terror radius will not hear the phasewalk sound, making it difficult for them to determine if she is actively phasing or simply standing still, unless they are using perks like Spine Chill or carrying a flashlight. Since survivors often attempt to juke by running directly at what they perceive as the stationary husk, this tactic can often catch them off-guard, providing an opportunity for a hit or down. Even if the trick is not successful, it still provides valuable information about survivor movements and can pressure them into making mistakes.
